How is Dental Anesthesia Used?

Dental anesthetics are used to numb the mouth and surrounding areas during dental procedures to prevent pain and discomfort or, if necessary, provide sedation for those with extreme anxiety or in cases of longer or more complicated treatments. Dental anesthesia can be administered in various forms, such as topical gels, injections or sprays. They are commonly used during procedures such as fillings, extractions and root canals.

What Types of Dental Anesthetics are Used for Dental Procedures?

There are several types of dental anesthetics that can be used for dental procedures, including:

  • Local Anesthetics: These are injected directly into the area that needs to be numbed. Examples include lidocaine, mepivacaine and prilocaine.
  • Topical Anesthetics: These are applied directly to the surface of the gums or inside of the cheek. Examples include benzocaine and lidocaine.
  • Intraligamental Anesthetics: These are injected into the periodontal ligament, which surrounds the tooth roots. Examples include articaine and bupivacaine.
  • Conscious Sedation: This involves the use of sedative drugs to help patients relax and reduce anxiety during dental procedures. Examples include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives and IV sedation.
  • General Anesthesia: This is used for more complex procedures, involving a combination of drugs to help put the patient to sleep. General anesthesia is typically administered by an anesthesiologist and is used for complex procedures like wisdom teeth extraction, jaw surgery and some cases of implant placement.
