What is Restorative Dentistry?

Many patients dream of a perfect smile. And for those with damaged or missing teeth, restorative dentistry can make this dream a reality. Restorative dentists restore the function, integrity and esthetics of a patient’s teeth and mouth through a range of direct and indirect restoration procedures and treatments, such as cavity fillings, dental crowns, dental bridges and more.

Direct vs Indirect Restoration Procedures

Dental restorations can be either direct or indirect, both of which involve different approaches to repairing and restoring teeth. Below, we’ve highlighted key differences between the two:

  • Placement: A direct restoration is fabricated directly inside the patient’s mouth, usually in a single visit, whereas an indirect restoration is custom-made outside of the patient’s mouth, either in house or via a laboratory.
  • Applications: A direct restoration, such as a Class II restoration, is suitable for composite fillings for small to moderately sized cavities, chipped or broken teeth and minor cosmetic improvements. An indirect restoration is ideal for crown and bridge procedures, as well as dental implants, veneers, inlays and onlays.
  • Materials: A direct restoration commonly uses materials such as silver amalgam, composite resin and glass ionomer. An indirect restoration, on the other hand, typically uses ceramic, metal-ceramic, cast-gold and base metal alloys.
  • Advantages: A direct restoration is usually faster and more cost-effective and is typically completed in the same appointment. An indirect restoration often needs more than one appointment to complete, but offers a higher level of precision, durability and esthetics when a more detailed and customized approach is required.
