Serving the underserved and breaking down barriers to care has been a lifelong passion for Dr. Allen Wong, Professor Emeritus at Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry, and Henry Schein Cares. With the support of a local clinic, community dental providers, the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) team, and the Blue Star Veteran Organization, the Southern Alameda County Dental Society (SACDS) in Northern California recently hosted two days of sponsored dental care, one for children with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and one for veterans who are ineligible for dental care in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals. For children with intellectual or developmental disabilities, it is extremely difficult to find providers who are willing to make accommodations to provide accessible dental care, while many veterans face challenges finding affordable dental care when they are ineligible to receive it from understaffed and underfunded VA hospitals. Through the efforts of many volunteers and phenomenal event coordination led by SACDS Executive Director, Melinda Sciandri, these underserved groups received long-awaited dental care, bringing new smiles to light.
