What are Dental Impressions?

Dental impressions play a crucial role in restorative dentistry, enabling you to precisely replicate a patient's teeth, gums and surrounding oral structures. These impressions — and the materials and accessories used to create them — help lay the foundation for creating precise, well-fitting restorations that meet the highest standards of care. From dental crowns and bridges to dentures, inlays and onlays, dental implants and more, the right tools and supplies can make all the difference.

Dental Impressions

What Material is Used for Dental Impressions?

Dental impressions are made from various materials, each offering unique properties suited to different clinical needs. Typical examples include (but are not limited to):

Alginate

Preliminary dental impressions, sometimes referred to as primary or diagnostic impressions, are the initial impressions taken of a patient's teeth and gums. Alginate is commonly used for these types of impressions because of its quick-setting, flexible and water-based properties. This makes it ideal for creating study models and other orthodontic appliances.

Impression Compound

Impression compound is a type of adaptable thermoplastic impression material that softens when heated and hardens as it cools. This unique characteristic makes it well-suited for applications such as border molding, impression trays and preliminary dental impressions, particularly for cases involving edentulous patients.

Polyether & Vinyl Polysiloxane

Final dental impressions, or definitive impressions, are the last impressions taken and require a high level of accuracy. Materials like polyether and vinyl polysiloxane are often selected for this purpose due to their exceptional precision and dimensional stability.

Zinc Oxide Eugenol

Zinc oxide eugenol, also known as ZOE, is typically used for bite registrations, temporary restorations and in specific final dental impressions, such as complete dentures. ZOE's rigidity and stability is especially beneficial in capturing the precise anatomy of edentulous arches.
