Surgical N95 Respirator

Surgical N95 Respirator, also referred as a medical respirator, are regulated by NIOSH and are recommended by the CDC for use by health care personnel (HCP) who need protection from both airborne and fluid hazards (e.g., splashes, sprays).

N95 Particulate Respirator

N95 Particulate Respirator, are regulated by NIOSH to filter out at least 95% of very small (0.3 micron) particles, including bacteria and viruses, but are not rated for fluid resistance.

Medical Masks

Medical Masks, both come in Procedure (Ear loop Masks) and Surgical (tie on) variations that are rated to 3 levels of protection based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard of medical face masks (ASTM F2100) which demonstrate performance in the following areas:

  • Fluid Resistance – Resistance to penetration by synthetic blood
  • Differential Pressure – or breathability
  • Filter efficiency – ability to filter out bacteria and sub-micron particles

Selecting the Right Surgical Mask

Choosing the right surgical mask for a particular procedure is an important part of your personal protective equipment (PPE) protocol. Although masks may look similar, each mask has notable differences in performance and level of fluid resistance and particle filtration.

Understanding the ASTM performance level of each surgical mask or procedural mask can help make the selection process easier and ensure your mask will provide the appropriate protection to minimize the spread of potentially infectious diseases.

ASTM Performance Levels

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed specifications for surgical masks and procedural masks. The current standard, ASTM F2100-11, specifies five basic criteria for surgical masks:

  • Fluid resistance: This measures the mask's ability to resist the penetration of synthetic blood under pressure. The higher the fluid resistance, the better the protection against fluids
  • Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE): This measures the percentage of bacteria-sized particles that are filtered out by the mask. The higher the BFE, the better the protection against bacteria
  • Sub-micron particulate filtration efficiency (PFE): This measures the percentage of sub-micron particles that are filtered out by the mask. The higher the PFE, the better the protection against small particles, such as viruses
  • Differential pressure (Delta P): This measures the pressure drop across the mask, which is a measure of breathing resistance. The higher the Delta P, the more difficult it is to breathe through the mask.
  • Flame spread: This measures the likelihood that the mask will catch fire and spread flames

The appropriate ASTM performance level for a surgical mask will depend on the specific procedure being performed. For example, a procedure that involves a high risk of exposure to blood or other fluids would require a mask with a higher fluid resistance.
It is also important to consider the size of the particles that need to be filtered. For example, a procedure that involves a high risk of exposure to viruses would require a mask with a high PFE.
Finally, the breathing resistance of the mask should also be considered. If the mask is difficult to breathe through, it may be less likely to be worn correctly.
By understanding the ASTM performance levels of surgical masks, you can choose the right surgical mask for the specific procedure being performed. This will help to ensure that you are adequately protected from the spread of infection.

What to Consider Before Purchasing Surgical Masks

  • Identify your needs - What type of procedures will the masks be used for? What level of protection do you need? Do you need fluid resistance? Once you know your needs, you can start to narrow down your choices
  • Research different types of masks - There are many different types of surgical masks available on the market, each with its own features and benefits. Read reviews and compare products to find the best ones for your needs
  • Consider your budget - Surgical masks can range in price from a few dollars each to over a dollar each. It's important to find a mask that fits your budget and provides the level of protection you need
  • Storage - Surgical masks should be stored in a clean, dry place. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or in humid conditions
  • Look for masks that are FDA-approved or NIOSH-certified. This means that the masks have been tested and meet certain safety and performance standards
  • Consider the size and fit of the masks. Surgical masks should fit snugly but comfortably over the nose and mouth. They should also have ear loops or straps that can be adjusted to ensure a secure fit.
  • Make sure the masks are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Surgical masks may be worn for several hours at a time, so it's important to choose a mask that is comfortable to wear.
  • Purchase masks in bulk. This can save you money in the long run, and it will ensure that you have a ready supply of masks on hand.

How to Properly Wear a Surgical Masks

As a medical professional working with patients, it is important to properly wear a surgical mask to protect yourself and your patients from the spread of infection.

To properly wear a surgical mask, follow these steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before putting on the mask.
  2. Remove the mask from the packaging and inspect it for tears or damage.
  3. Hold the mask by the ear loops or straps and place one loop over each ear.
  4. Adjust the straps or loops so that the mask fits snugly but comfortably over your nose and mouth.
  5. Pinch the metal nosepiece over the bridge of your nose to create a tight seal.
  6. Avoid touching the mask while you are working with patients.
  7. If the mask becomes wet or soiled, replace it with a new one immediately.
  8. Surgical masks should be worn for no more than 8 hours at a time.
  9. When putting on or taking off your mask, avoid touching the inside of the mask.
  10. If you have facial hair, such as a beard or mustache, make sure that it is trimmed so that it does not interfere with the fit of the mask.
  11. If you are wearing glasses, make sure that they fit snugly over the top of the mask.

By following these tips, medical professionals working with patients can help to protect themselves and their patients from the spread of infection.
