Abrasions and Lacerations

Abrasions and Lacerations

Abrasions, also referred to as scrapes, are an injury to the surface of the skin.

Abrasions affect the epidermis or superficial layer of the skin and disrupt the integrity of the skin exposing the area to the risk of infection. There may be some bleeding but it is usually minimal. Mild abrasions usually heal without problems but deeper abrasions may form scabs or result in scarring.

Lacerations are irregular tears many times caused by trauma or surgical break in the skin (also called incision). A laceration of wound can be superficial or deep in the skin.

Treatment Best Practices:

  1. Lacerations and abrasions should be cleaned first and any debris removed. Bleeding should be controlled and the laceration may require stitches.
  2. SilvrSTAT should be applied to prevent infection including MRSA, and to promote healing. With the increase in MRSA, HAI, and CAI infections, it is very important to choose a topical antimicrobial that is active and effective that does not promote bacterial resistance. SilvrSTAT will also keep the area moist which is also important for proper wound healing. A sterile dressing or adhesive bandage may be applied to help protect the area while it heals. SilvrSTAT will also help with the pain that may be caused by the injury.
  3. Excessive pain should be treated with oral analgesics when indicated. SilvrSTAT is applied as a clear hydrogel just once a day or once every 3 days compared to other silver products that are applied 2-3 times a day and is reimbursable by the ounce under HCPCS Code#A6248.
  4. Continue daily until area is healed or at the direction of the healthcare prescriber. Apply scar management as needed.
