Considerations When Choosing a Hypodermic Syringe and Needle

When purchasing hypodermic supplies, like needles and syringes, there are 3 key points to consider:

1. What type of needle hub/syringe will you need? Usages and medications often dictate the most appropriate syringe, with special consideration given to the tips. For example, low dose applications like insulin often utilize a syringe with a permanently attached needle, providing for a decrease in medication waste and easy clean-up. Another popular tip, the Luer lock, allows for easy attachment and removal of the needle. With a simple twist, the needle hub is locked into place keeping the connection secure and preventing accidental disconnection.

2. What is the volume and viscosity of the medication to be administered? Medication volume determines the actual size of the syringe while viscosity and injection location will determine needle gauge and length.

3. What is the patient’s age? Size and placement of the injection has a direct bearing on needle length. For example, a younger child would likely benefit from a shorter needle. Always note whether the injection will be subcutaneous or intermuscular before selecting gauge and length.
