I feel blessed to have this opportunity and look forward to using this platform to continue advocating for my athletes, educating my students, and contributing to the growth of the athletic training profession. As an athletic trainer, I strive to serve others with respect and compassion, recognizing the challenges our athletes face and helping them to overcome them.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Henry Schein Athletics and the sports medicine community for selecting me as the recipient of the 2025 Henry Schein Rising Star Award. I am truly humbled and grateful to be chosen from among so many incredible candidates.

I am thankful for the chance to make a greater impact in this field and to be a faithful ambassador for this amazing profession.

Ian's Bio

As Head Athletic Trainer for Desert Ridge High School in Arizona, Ian Jeffer teaches sports medicine on campus and provides exceptional care for the Jaguars. In addition to teaching, he runs a student sports medicine club, working with the junior high and elementary schools to spread joy and excitement for the profession while inspiring future ATs.

From helping his students navigate the college application process to regularly supervising events outside of requirements, Ian goes above and beyond to ensure his athletes receive the best possible care. Ian is well known around campus for his creative teaching methods, making others want to pursue careers in sports medicine.

Marissa's Bio

To address a lack of universal athletic training within her system, Marissa Lucas accepted a role leading athletic trainers in her area. From meeting with district officials to create awareness for the importance of athletic trainers and enhance benefits, to partnering with local universities, giving interns the opportunity to gain valuable athletic training experience, she is a strong advocate for the profession. Marissa has also used her resources to educate future athletic trainers, launching a student athletic training program. Furthermore, she has become a preceptor, lending her athletic training room as an observation site for a current senior pursuing an athletic training degree from Augusta University.

Addressing both physical and mental health concerns, Marissa has set herself apart by working closely with all coaches to ensure seamless communication around her treatment plans. Her unwavering commitment, even outside of working hours, ensures athletes and staff always feel supported.

She is viewed as a mentor, leading community service projects in partnership with the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Marissa has built meaningful relationships within her school and community and consistently demonstrates her passion and dedication to athletic training.

Angel's Bio

Though Angel Picart has only been an athletic trainer for three years, she has two cardiac arrest saves in addition to receiving the Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida Life Saver award for treating an athlete suffering from asphyxiation and hypoxia.

Angel goes above and beyond for her athletic training students and athletes, purchasing equipment for students in need and items such as ice during hot summer months out of pocket. Her students appreciate her respectful but fun teaching style, and she is known as someone who cares deeply about her patients.

About the Rising Star Award

Created in 2021, the annual Award honors emerging athletic trainers with one to five years of experience in the sports medicine industry. It recognizes recently graduated athletic trainers in the US who have not yet reached a senior-level position but have a strong career trajectory with the potential for forward advancement and appointment at the highest levels of the profession.

Three finalists were selected by a panel comprised of athletic trainers and industry experts in the field. Together, the committee members bring athletic training experience from a range of backgrounds, professional experience, and geographic locations.

This year's winner, Ian Jeffer, received a Marc Pro device and a Medi Kit™ MULE filled with athletic training supplies.
